Outreach 2022 - 2023
Take a look at some of the events we did this year!
We are always looking for new ways to increase STEM education in the community, so contact us if you are interested!
As a part of our goal to expand STEM opportunities to those without easy accessibility, our team hosts its own series of academic summer camps focused on building foundational STEM skills.
-
Courses offered to a variety of age and skill ranges
-
Skills taught function as fundamental stepping-stones to more advanced concepts
-
Taught by fellow team members
We offer a variety of subjects as well, such as:
-
Robotic Design
-
Physics
-
Mathematics
-
Programming
We hope to expand BeaverCamps in the future by holding in-person and online sessions during the summers, as well as having sessions throughout the school year for students who are interested.

RoboCamps - Summer 2022
-
A multi-week summer camp held in collaboration by us and Poolesville High School's FRC team, Team 4099
-
The summer camps were hosted in-person and consisted of a wide variety of hands-on activities
-
Both teams joined forces to mentor 75+ students and provide instruction for robotics-based activities
-
Each week, guided by team members, students expanded their existing skills by exploring new concepts. In doing so, they furthered their fundamental knowledge of robotics and engineering and their curiosity and passion for STEM
Some activities we did during the camp:
-
Learned how to use VEX IQ Robots
-
Applied foundational engineering concepts:
-
Torque
-
Gear Ratios
-
Programming
-
Design
-
MoCo Robo- Ongoing
To advocate support for STEM learning initiatives, our team helped make a proposal to the Montgomery County Board of Education, facilitating increased attention to the importance of STEM/robotics opportunities in our county. In our proposal, we requested:
-
Financial aid for rookie teams (allows for more robotics learning)
-
STEAM building that has a shared practice field and power tools
-
Increased stipends for school sponsors (due to off-season projects)
-
More accessible opportunities by publishing a new STEAM website to publicize STEAM and robotics events, including a page on how to get involved with resources
Our team helped the cause by:
-
Gathering other robotics teams so that their opinions and experiences could be heard
-
Preparing testimonial speeches for the Board of Education Business Meetings
-
Preparing a White Paper for Board of Education members to better understand how they can help
-
500+ FRC, 400+ FTC, 100+ Vex Robotics, 300+ FLL students impacted

STEM Activities at Local Middle School - Summer 2022
-
Team members visited Kingsview Middle School to give interactive STEM lessons to students during the offseason
-
The visits included an assortment of demonstrations, science experiments, and collaborative activities
-
Reached students across the county
-
30+ students per class
Robotics Activities
-
Learn valuable CAD concepts
-
Drive the BeaverBot
-
Ask robotics questions regarding design, function, and programming
Experiments & STEM Lessons taught
-
Pretzel & marshmallow towers (center of gravity)
-
Sinking foil boats with pennies (buoyancy)
-
Paper airplane design competition (aerodynamics)
-
Balloon cars (Newton's Laws)
-
Lemon and heat secret messages (oxidation)
Rockville Science Day - April 2022
-
Rockville Science Day is an annual public science fair
-
Our team held a booth so kids could drive around our robot and learn about some robotics opportunities in our community, such as:
-
BeaverCamps
-
RoboCamps
-
FIRST competitions
-
Online resources to learn about robot-building
-
-
Showcased mock-FTC games with other local FTC teams for students

American Chinese School Ceremony Visit - June 2022
-
Held a booth at the local American Chinese School
-
At our team's booth, we demonstrated the robot's mechanisms, answered questions on how to design, prepare a robot, and also introduce new robotics opportunities in our community, such as:
-
BeaverCamps
-
RoboCamps
-
FIRST competitions (FTC-specific)
-
Poolesville Day - September 2022
-
Our team set up a booth at Poolesville Day, the annual community event for the town of Poolesville. Throughout the day we:
-
Talked to many families and introduced them to FIRST, encouraging students to join FLL and FTC
-
Had students drive the robot and complete a challenge
-
Answered questions about our design process, electrical components, mechanical parts, competition experience, and FTC in general

Northwood STEM Festival - November 2022
-
An event at Northwood High School hosted by MCPS and Educational partners present opportunities for STEAM
-
Had activities for children of all ages at our booth:
-
Science trivia
-
Robot game
-
Taught children how to control the robot and maneuver items
-
-
Introduced FIRST and answered other general robotics questions
